Summer Camp Taido’s techniques have as their inspiration various movements from nature: the rolling and crashing of a wave, the swirling of winds, and the shifting of clouds. Outdoor practice with nature as the backdrop makes a great way to learn these techniques. Each summer, a group of Taido students that has numbered nearly 400 in recent years, has traveled to Hilton Head, SC, or, more recently, Panama City Beach, FL, to work out on the beach. Rigorous workouts in the afternoon of the first day and early morning of the next day prepare students for belt tests later that second day. The afternoon of the second day is reserved for a fun workout and free time at the pool or beach, and a fantastic banquet and awards ceremony is held that night. Participants create friendships by sharing rooms with other families or individuals. In a review of more than 750 other U.S. martial arts schools, no other reports this large a group and a summer program. Taido’s success reflects its strong organization, the leadership of its outstanding black belts, and the participation of parents that made 2006’s Summer Camp the largest and best in the U.S.
